In the dynamic landscape of adult entertainment, few stars have shone as brightly and left an indelible mark as Jessica Drake. And this week, I had the opportunity to interview her on the most recent episode of Locker Room Talk & Shots Podcast. Born on October 14, 1974, in San Antonio, Texas, Drake’s journey in the industry spans over two decades, characterized not only by her on-screen performances but also by her unwavering commitment to advocacy, education, and philanthropy.
But Jessica’s journey to becoming empowered started long before she starred in her first adult porn film.
Jessica Drake’s Early Life
When asked about her career in the adult industry Drake says, “It’s not anything that I ever imagined that I would be doing, and I think part of that reason is the massive stigma that goes along with the adult industry, all the stereotypes that people have, all of the preconceived notions they have of what being in porn is or what being a sex worker is. I mean, I had them myself in the beginning.”
Jessica Drake’s childhood looks different than some might imagine, “I come from East Texas. I was raised very conservatively,” Drake explains. “I was raised Jehovah’s Witness as well. I had abstinence, only sex education. I had a lot of misinformation taught to me about sex, or no information, and a lot of fear-based stuff. So I found myself leaving home at a younger age because of how repressive it was.”
After leaving home at a young age, Jessica Drake became a stripper. She says, “I’ve been a lot more forthcoming about this in the past few years. But look, the reality is I was an underage stripper in Texas.” While Jessica was stripping, she also started going to college. She says she chose to go, not because she knew what she wanted, but because she thought it was the thing to do. But her life would take a different path.
Early Career and Rise to Prominence
Jessica Drake’s entry into the adult entertainment industry in the late 1990s marked the beginning of a career that would redefine the industry’s landscape. Initially involved in modeling and stripping, she transitioned to adult films with remarkable ease. Drake explains, “I was probably about 24 or 25 by this time. So I had a whole life already dancing, going to school, l and working other jobs, and I worked at a club that had feature entertainers…so I got it in my head that I wanted to be a feature dancer. They sent some people out to meet me and little did I know that those people had ties to the adult industry here in California.”
Drake wasn’t immediately sold on the idea of starring in porn right away. “My first impression was, there’s no way I could ever do that. But I ended up being friends with these people. I came out to LA a few times to spend time with them and I think a pivotal moment for me was when they took me onto the set of an adult movie. I was a Jill Kelly fan back then and it was, it was a Jill Kelly movie and they took me onto the set and they made me the condom and lube person,” Drake explains. “So I was standing 15 to 20 feet away from one of my sex idols and they were having sex and my mind was blown and it was my responsibility to give them condoms when they needed them and offer lube and run and get the water and baby wipes and paper towels.”
“It sounds really funny to say it now and it’s also a bit surreal when I think about where I came from versus then and what I saw versus where I am today,” Drake says, “But I was thrilled, it was the time of my life and of course, I left that set thinking it’s nothing like I thought it was. So I kept coming out to LA from Texas and I did a few magazines, did a little like HBO, “Skinnamax” type stuff, and then, we were sitting around talking one day and they said do you want to do a movie? And I said yes, and it just sort of popped out”
What set Drake apart from her contemporaries was not just her striking looks and on-screen talent but also her entrepreneurial spirit.
