Picture this: An injury sidelines you from much-needed access to a postpartum workout routine. You’re a mother of three with a hectic schedule and now no way to get in shape after giving birth to your last child. What do you do? If you’re Sarahca Peterson, you turn a shitty situation into Tiktok gold. Sarahca who is now fondly known as the beloved queen of Kegels all across Tiktok land and beyond, turned to pelvic floor exercises as her sole physical fitness outlet, and her postpartum Kegel journey didn’t just strengthen her coochie, it created an entire coochie community that is now known as the Kegel Krew.

Since posting a single close-up video telling viewers to give her 50 Kegels went viral earlier this year, Sarahca’s Tiktok account has grown from having just a couple thousand followers to helping tens of thousands of women around the world tighten, tone, and take care of their vaginas. I recently sat down with Sarahca on Locker Room Talk & Shots Podcast to discuss how she ended up becoming the Kegel Queen, what exactly the Kegel Krew is, and how tightening pussies is now directly tied to her love of the “P” word. No, not “pussy”. We are talking poetry.

Who is Sarahca Peterson?

As a spoken word artist, published author, CEO of The Round Table Project, and the Executive Director of The Art of Community Sarahca’s journey transcends the physical. Her diverse background in arts and community building brought an unexpected perspective to the Locker Room. Our conversation revealed that her ambitious project ‘Small Towns Need Poetry Too‘ which aims to bring a cultural renaissance to smaller communities, isn’t so different from her most recent creation: The Kegel Krew.

The Kegel Krew is a diverse group of Tiktok fans made up of mostly women (there is a man or two as well) who follow her for her funny and authentic daily Kegel reminders. What started as a couple thousand, has now turned into a booming group of over 52,000 members at the time of our interview.

The Kegel Krew is now a vibrant community of women who gather each Sunday on TikTok live to chat with Sarahca, share funny stories, and just hang out. Sarahca describes these hang sessions by saying, “It’s just a vibe.” But that’s not all this group of Kegel conquerors do. They recently started attending virtual yoga classes together after Sarahca was approached by a member of the Krew who was inspired to offer free yoga classes to Kegel Krew members.

For Sarahca, poetry is an integral part of community building, so it’s no surprise that she plans to bring poetry to her Krew. Sarahca shared that she has been envisioning launching Kegel Krew erotic poetry readings in the near future, proving that strengthening pelvic muscles and self-expression can go hand in hand. The Kegel Crew is a testament to the fact that strengthening pelvic muscles and self-expression can go hand in hand. It has become a platform for women to prioritize self-care and embrace their sexual health.

Breaking Sexual Shame

During our conversation, Sarahca shared how as a black woman, her sexuality had been used against her her entire life. Like many black women, she experienced her gorgeous curves and love of sex being used to shame her and make her feel dirty. She explained that sexuality is often shrouded in secrecy and shame and that she believes it needs to be discussed openly. The Kegel Krew online gatherings give women the opportunity to do just that.

Benefits of Kegels

Kegels are often associated with post-pregnancy healing and urinary incontinence, but the truth is, that a regular kegel exercise routine can have far-reaching benefits for both men and women.

Benefits for Women

The following are some of the benefits for women:

  1. Improved Pelvic Floor Muscle Strength: Kegel exercises target the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, uterus, and bowel. Regular practice strengthens these muscles, reducing the risk of issues like urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
  2. Urinary Incontinence Prevention: Strong pelvic floor muscles help prevent stress urinary incontinence, which can occur during activities like sneezing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects.
  3. Postpartum Recovery: Performing Kegel exercises during and after pregnancy can aid in recovery by supporting stretched pelvic muscles, enhancing bladder control, and addressing any issues related to childbirth.
  4. Enhanced Sexual Satisfaction: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can lead to increased vaginal tone and sensation, potentially improving sexual pleasure for both partners.
  5. Preventing Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in maintaining the position of pelvic organs. Regular Kegel exercises can help reduce the risk of prolapse, a condition where pelvic organs descend into or beyond the vaginal canal.
  6. Increased Bladder Control: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can lead to better bladder control and a reduced frequency of urgency to urinate.
  7. Preparation for Menopause: As hormonal changes during menopause can impact pelvic health, practicing Kegel exercises prior to and during menopause can help maintain pelvic muscle tone and reduce the risk of issues like incontinence.
  8. Improved Bowel Function: A strong pelvic floor supports bowel function and can aid in preventing constipation and other bowel-related concerns.
  9. Quick and Discreet Exercise: Kegel exercises are simple, discreet, and can be done virtually anywhere without anyone noticing. This makes them a convenient addition to daily routines.
  10. Customized Workout: Kegel exercises can be tailored to an individual’s needs. Women can gradually increase the intensity and duration of the exercises as their pelvic floor muscles become stronger.

Benefits for men

Yes, even men can benefit from Kegel exercises. The following are some of the benefits men may experience when doing Kegel exercises regularly.

  1. Improved Erectile Function: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can enhance blood flow to the genital area, potentially improving erectile function and overall sexual performance.
  2. Enhanced Ejaculatory Control: Kegel exercises can aid in developing better control over ejaculation, helping men last longer during sexual activity.
  3. Support for Prostate Health: A strong pelvic floor can contribute to better prostate health and potentially reduce the risk of prostate-related issues, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis.
  4. Urinary Incontinence Management: Kegel exercises can be effective in managing urinary incontinence in men, particularly after prostate surgery or due to other underlying factors.
  5. Improved Bladder Control: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can lead to better bladder control and reduced frequency of urgency to urinate.
  6. Prevention of Premature Ejaculation: Regular Kegel exercises can help men develop more control over their ejaculatory reflex, reducing the likelihood of premature ejaculation.
  7. Support for Post-Prostate Surgery Recovery: After prostate surgery, men often experience weakened pelvic floor muscles. Kegel exercises can aid in their recovery and improve overall pelvic health.
  8. Enhanced Core Stability: The pelvic floor muscles are an integral part of the core muscle group. Strengthening these muscles can contribute to better overall core stability and posture.
  9. Improved Bowel Function: Strong pelvic floor muscles support healthy bowel function and can aid in preventing constipation and other bowel-related concerns.
  10. Enhanced Confidence and Well-Being: Improved sexual function, better bladder control, and overall pelvic health can boost a man’s self-confidence and contribute to his overall sense of well-being.

The Power of the P-Word

Sarahca’s work is about more than Kegels and poetry; it’s about empowerment, self-expression, community building, and embracing women’s natural sexual nature. Her journey serves as an inspiration for others to explore their path to sexual empowerment, physical strength, and community growth. Through Kegels, poetry, and a strong community, Sarahca is redefining the narrative around women, sexual health, and empowerment.
